About MEMEX

MEMEX is an independent tech media outlet that reads the words, ideas, and primary sources of the world's AI and IT technologists, in Japanese. Talks, podcasts, blog posts, and industry events are put into context on a primary-source basis, and presented as a network of relationships between people, organizations, and technology trends. This English section carries translated versions of a curated subset of the Japanese archive.

Where the name comes from

The name MEMEX carries two origins: Memex, the personal knowledge-augmentation device Vannevar Bush envisioned in his 1945 essay "As We May Think", and MEME, the unit of knowledge that accumulates on social media in 2025-2026. It attempts to connect the 1945 vision of knowledge augmentation with the 2026 social-media unit of knowledge, under a single name.

Coverage

MEMEX currently publishes 105 articles in Japanese, of which 85 are also available in English translation, alongside 126 people profiles (available in both languages) and 19 topics (topic browsing is Japanese only for now). The core areas covered are:

  • AI research and model development (key figures at Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepMind, xAI, Meta AI, and others)
  • AI infrastructure and semiconductors (NVIDIA, hyperscalers, power, GPU economics)
  • Language runtimes and protocols (developers of TypeScript, Python, MCP, and others)
  • Industry structure (an archive of acquisitions, pivots, and sunsets)

Three editorial principles

  1. Primary sources only

    Citations are drawn only from the speakers themselves, official YouTube channels, official blogs, or academic papers. X reposts, secondary commentary, and paywalled content are not used as citation sources.

  2. No strong words

    We avoid five categories of exaggeration: confidence, completeness, urgency, exclusivity, and shock. Evaluative terms such as "leading" or "biggest" are avoided unless they can be verified against a primary source.

  3. Copyright compliance

    YouTube videos are embedded only, never re-uploaded. Quotation is kept to the minimum necessary. Translations cite their source and preserve attribution to the original speaker.

Editorial structure

MEMEX is an independently run, individually operated media outlet. Editorial and content decisions are made without outside interference. It receives capital backing from KK siiiiiixth (株式会社siiiiiixth), but editorial authority belongs to MEMEX. The "Backed by KK siiiiiixth" line in the footer makes this funding relationship explicit.

Site infrastructure (the Cloudflare account, domain registrar, and API token issuance) is held by a separate party who bears the legal and contractual responsibility for it, kept apart from editorial authority.

AI crawlers, RAG, and training use
